Duke of Earl Wines has been over 50 years in the making, since Gene Chandler made his first journey to Europe to entertain crowds with his music. While making his way through France and Italy, he gained an appreciation for the remarkable food and wine that they produced.
This love for fine European wine only grew throughout his life, as he continued to enjoy vintage European wines, learning more with each sip.
On his 75th birthday, his daughter Tyra wanted to do something special for him despite his insistence of not celebrating birthdays. She ordered personalized bottles of Merlot, his favorite, from France with his record label’s picture on the bottle and the inscription “Happy Birthday Daddy!”.
The Duke was blown away by both the quality of the wine and the eye-catching label. After proclaiming “I’ve been to 72 countries and I’ve never seen something like this on a wine bottle”, he and Tyra decided to develop their own wine brand, aptly named Duke of Earl Wines.
